Chapter Eight: A Big Pile Of Bugs

The red sun broke like a cascade of blood over the ruined splendor of Washington DC. Ruby light dusted along buildings that had been struck by a vast, terrible heat and left to melt and burn and tumble over – and the shadows of human beings were scorched into long abandoned pavement. Craters were all that was left of the White House, and similar bomb marks were cast here and there. The Icarus VI dropped down under the shadow of the tottering, scorched Washington Monument, and the gangplank lowered down with a crunch. Marcus Wolfe walked down slowly.

“Well, goddamn,” he said.

“I know, right?” Lucy walked down the gangplank. “For once in our life, the fucking ship didn’t explode on the way to where we were going.”

“No, I mean, this is very Fallout 3,” Marc said, shaking his head. “Like, look! Look!” He held up his hand. Slowly, his skin was beginning to grow more and more grubby and smeared with dust, while a faintly green color filter started to coat everything, turning the increasingly yellow-white light of the sun into a faux-Matrix haze. “We’re getting the fucking Bethesda color grading! God it’s so stupid.”

“I mean New Vegas had a piss filter,” Lucy pointed out.

“True, but that’s different,” Marc said, frowning.

“Why?” Lucy asked.

“Cause New Vegas was good?” Marc said.

“Touche.” Lucy frowned. “Do you think that the city was destroyed by the wish that made the Earth all green again, then got hit by a nuclear bomb? Or did the wish that made it Fallout 3 happen first, and the bomb’s blast killed all the plants?”

“I think it was probably a very, very, very confusing five or six seconds,” Marc said, solemnly.

Behind them, Tiff hauled out a narrow, oblong device. It started to clatter and click. She made a soft huh noise. Lucy and Marc turned to face her. “What’s that?” Lucy asked.

“Geiger counter,” she said, tucking it away. “This place is radioactive as shit.”

Marc and Lucy stood perfectly still.

The three of them rushed back onto the ship and withdrew the gangplank, then shut the doors as fast as they could. Marc turned back to face the stuffed animal, space elf, anime girl, Hiigaran, and possible Solar Exalted that made up the rest of his party. “Does anyone have a fucking radiation suit?” he asked.

“No,” Lenore said.

“Nope,” Mollie said, shrugging.

Tune shook her head.

“I wish,” Emilia said, scowling as she glared past Marc and out the set on the gangplank.

“Sorry, no,” Lucy said.

“Yes,” Zae’el said.

“No,” Tiff said, her voice apologetic.

Marc sighed. “Well, damn it,” he said, turning back out. “Maybe we can just stay in the hull, limit our travel on the top deck? Maybe we can turn the tiller using mage hand.”

Zae’el kicked him in the shin. Marc jerked. “Ow!” He started to jump, grabbing onto his shin. He tucked his leg against his chest and glowered at Zae’el. “What was that for!?” he asked.

“I have such a protective garment,” Zae’el said, her voice smug as her serrated ears twitched up arrogantly.
